Popular DC tavern apologizes for promoting bottomless mimosas during Kavanaugh-Ford hearing

Shaw’s Tavern, a Washington restaurant and bar, issued an apology Thursday for advertising bottomless mimosas along with extended opening hours for patrons hoping to watch Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing at the venue.

“We would like to apologize for the feature of bottomless mimosas,” a statement posted on the Shaw’s Tavern Facebook page read. “We are opening early today serving our breakfast and lunch menus to provide a place for those who wanted to watch the hearing. Along with that menu, bottomless mimosas are a feature we offer.”

Shaw’s Tavern will donate all proceeds made Thursday to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, a nonprofit anti-sexual assault organization also known as RAINN, the statement added.

“It was an oversight on our part given the very serious circumstances of today’s hearing and in no way did we intend to offend anyone or make light of the situation,” the Facebook post continued. “Shaw’s Tavern stands with the victims.”

In a since-deleted tweet, Shaw’s Tavern promoted opening an hour earlier than usual to coincide with the 10 a.m. start of Kavanaugh and Ford’s hearing before the panel to address sexual misconduct allegations ahead of a vote on the judge’s nomination. Its poster also mentioned that bar service would commence at 11 a.m., including bottomless mimosas for $15.

Shaw’s Tavern was quickly criticized on social media for displaying a lack of tact, given Ford’s claim that Kavanaugh was drunk when he allegedly groped her and tried to remove her clothes at a Maryland high school house party in the 1980s. Kavanaugh has denied Ford’s accusation.
