Suspense as to whether Jeff Sessions can win back his former Senate seat will carry on for a few more months.
A runoff election between former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville and President Trump’s former attorney general was postponed from March 31 to July 14.
The postponement was prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.
There have been about 205,452 confirmed coronavirus cases around the world, 82,000 recoveries, and 8,248 deaths, according to the latest reading by the Johns Hopkins University tracker. In the United States, there have been 6,519 cases and 115 deaths.
Trump endorsed Tuberville over Sessions earlier this month. Sessions, who was the first senator to endorse Trump in 2016, was ousted as attorney general after his recusal from overseeing the Russia investigation. Trump frequently denigrated Sessions for the decision, which was followed by the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the appointment of Robert Mueller to be special counsel in charge of the inquiry.
The winner of the runoff will face incumbent Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat, in the general election.
