Russia tests anti-satellite weapons system

Russia conducted a test of its anti-satellite weapons system that could destroy a spacecraft in low Earth orbit, according to U.S. Space Command.

“This test is further proof of Russia’s hypocritical advocacy of outer space arms control proposals designed to restrict the capabilities of the United States while clearly having no intention of halting their counterspace weapons programs,” Gen. John Raymond, commander of U.S. Space Command, said in a statement Wednesday.

It’s unclear if the missile test destroyed anything.

Russia has tested the anti-satellite weapons system periodically since 2014, with the last test taking place Nov. 15, according to an analysis from Secure World Foundation.

Last year, the United States said a pair of Russian satellites were following an American spy satellite.

“We view this behavior as unusual and disturbing,” Raymond told Time magazine. “It has the potential to create a dangerous situation in space.”
