Over 12,000 Russian troops killed in war, Ukrainian government says

More than 12,000 Russian troops have been killed in the war in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said on Wednesday.

Russia’s combat losses from Feb. 24 to March 9 include more than 12,000 personnel, 49 planes, 81 helicopters, 317 tanks, 120 artillery pieces, 1,070 armored personnel carriers, 56 multiple-launch rocket systems, two boats, 482 cars, 60 fuel tankers, seven drones, and 28 anti-aircraft systems, according to the Ukrainian government. The figures have not been independently verified and differ dramatically from the Pentagon’s latest estimate.

“The data is getting more precise. The calculation is complicated by the high intensity of combat,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said.

Lt. Gen. Scott David Berrier, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that his agency estimates between 2,000 and 4,000 Russian troops have been killed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. He noted that the agency has “low confidence” in the assessment.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian military officials claimed to have destroyed the Russian Vasily Bykov warship, one of two Russian warships made famous for the attack on Snake Island in the Black Sea last month.

Ukrainian officials also claimed to have killed two high-profile Russian generals in recent days.

Ukrainian officials said on Monday that Maj. Gen. Vitaly Gerasimov, chief of staff and first deputy commander of the 41st Army of the Central Military District of Russia, was killed during fighting near Kharkiv.

Maj. Gen. Andrey Sukhovetsky, the commanding general of the Russian 7th Guards Airborne Division, was said to have been killed by a Ukrainian sniper on March 3.
