WATCH: Anna Giaritelli says US is bracing for influx of immigrants sailing to Florida’s coast

In addition to the immigrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border on land, record numbers are taking to the sea as they flee Haiti and Cuba.

The Washington Examiner’s Anna Giaritelli told One America News Network Tuesday that Haiti’s unstable government is exacerbating the immigration and border crisis.

“The issue is, right now with gang violence in Haiti, the U.S. government is worried that Haitians could start not to come up through the land border and through Mexico, but actually getting on ships and boats,” Giaritelli said. “Some of these vessels are … it’s 30 people and it’s suitable for five or 10. I mean, it’s appalling how desperate people are. … That is what the U.S. is bracing for.”

‘IT’S A LIE. IT’S AN ILLUSION’: IMMIGRANTS SLAM BIDEN’S IMMIGRATION REFORM EFFORTS

Giaritelli explained that the current U.S. policy is for immigrants attempting to come via the water to be apprehended and returned to their country.

“The normal policy is when someone comes through the water from Haiti and Cuba — we’re seeing record numbers right now — they are held at Guantanamo Bay. There’s a specific migrant holding facility,” Giaritelli said, explaining that it is separate from the prison for terrorists. “And then they are returned within a day or so to Haiti or Cuba.”

Giaritelli added that the United States is also considering whether it needs to expand the number of beds from 200 to 400 at its Guantanamo Bay holding facility or whether it needs to utilize a third country before returning the immigrants. She noted, however, that the process is complicated due to countries not always being capable of receiving their citizens back.

“I think the Biden administration is hoping this is sort of a deterrence,” she said.

Giaritelli also discussed a video seen of Border Patrol agents being attacked by an illegal immigrant holding a flagpole as they walked a group of immigrants back across the border into Mexico.
