Editorial: Ballot change requires courtesy check

Hey, we could argue all day long whether Secretary of State Mary Kane?s shuffling of words in the ballot question was a fast one or merely well-intentioned clarification. Nobody will ever know for sure.

We do know for sure the proposal to constitutionally restrict sale of state parkland is prime for gossip because it resulted from an effort by Gov. Robert Ehrlich to sell 800 acres of permanent open space to a housing developer.

What there is no argument about is the fact that this move appears to show an Ehrlich appointee playing a game of three card monty on voters. Even the appearance is bad.

Kane could have avoided that stigma merely by putting the change right out on the table in front of everybody as a proposal, then soliciting comment.

That?s just common sense ? and good manners, ma?am.
