High Fairfax County home prices have prompted officials to pursue temporary housing for trainees in a wide variety of critical fields.
About 60 townhouse and condo units available to those in police, fire and rescue, health care and teacher training programs are planned throughout the county, said Department of Housing and Community Developments spokeswoman Kristina Norvell.
“The goal is to provide them with the support that they would need as they are moving up in the work force,” she said.
Only a handful of the dwellings are available at this point, however. The planning commission will weigh a proposal later this month to build 30 units off Route 50 for INOVA trainees and possibly school employees, Norvell said.
Leanna Hush of the Department of Planning and Zoning said the units would be provided at low cost to allow the trainees, who have limited income while they are in the programs, to live within Fairfax County.
