The NAACP sparked outrage after referring to 9/11 as a “horrible incident” in its post recognizing the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
“Today we remember all the lives lost and families affected during the horrific incident that occurred in 2001. #NeverForget,” the NAACP tweeted on Friday.
Many were outraged by the language the NAACP used to describe the terrorist attacks that claimed 2,977 lives. Steve Guest, the rapid response director for the Republican Party, said the attacks deserve stronger language.
“A terrorist attack occurred on September 11, 2001,” Guest tweeted. “America was attacked. It was not merely an ‘incident.'”

Some accused the organization of forgetting the true events of the day while using the hashtag #NeverForget. Others compared the language used by the NAACP to the remarks made by Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat, who referred to the terrorist attacks as “some people did something.”
It was an “incident”? I don’t think it was an incident. Seems like, in spite of your hashtag, you forgot. https://t.co/kImQx4Vgrd
