2020 Democratic presidential contender Amy Klobuchar joked about the proper stature for presidents and compared her height to the diminutive James Madison, a founding father and the fourth president of the United States.
The Minnesota senator, who at 5 feet, 8 inches is the smallest Democratic candidate, appeared on the Democratic primary debate stage at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles on Thursday night. The moderators opened the debate by asking each candidate how they would convince the American people that the House took the proper action in voting to impeach President Trump on Wednesday.

Klobuchar, 59, cited Madison and quipped that his height was presidential, asserting that his 5-foot-4-inch stature was a “pretty good” height for a president.
“What James Madison once said when he was speaking out at the Constitutional Convention — and, by the way, I think he’s a pretty good size for a president; he was 5-foot-4 — and what he said, he said the reason that we have these impeachment articles in the Constitution, that the provisions are in there, is because he feared that a president would betray the trust of the American people for a foreign power,” Klobuchar, who stands a few inches taller than Madison at 5 feet, 8 inches, said.
The House voted to impeach Trump on a largely party-line vote just one day prior to the debate. Two Democrats defected and voted against both articles, and one other Democrat voted against just one article.
