Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi joked to President Trump during an Oval Office meeting on Monday afternoon that his country was not involved in the alleged wiretapping of the GOP candidate’s campaign last fall.
A reporter asked Trump about “wiretaps” that the president has claimed his predecessor ordered. Trump did not respond to the question, but al-Abadi chirped in.
“We had nothing to do with the wiretap,” al-Abadi said, grabbing Trump’s arm as he made the joke.
The Iraqi leader is in Washington for meetings with the Trump administration. Earlier on Monday, FBI Director James Comey testified before the House Intelligence Committee that his agency had not found any evidence that Barack Obama or anyone in his White House spied on Trump’s campaign.
