The Washington Post editorial board said Democrats and others accusing FBI Director James Comey of deliberately trying to swing the election in Donald Trump’s favor are discrediting themselves.
The paper criticized Comey in an editorial Monday night for his ambiguous letter to Congress that said the FBI had obtained more emails related to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s private server. But the Post also hit Democrats for questioning Comey’s motives when they had previously showered him with praise for recommending to the Department of Justice against indicting Clinton.
“For Ms. Clinton and the Democrats, doing no harm would mean not imputing base motives to FBI Director James B. Comey or absurdly alleging, as did Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), that Mr. Comey may have violated the Hatch Act by intentionally seeking to get Mr. Trump elected,” said the Post. “For one thing, such allegations sound silly coming from people who practically canonized Mr. Comey a few months ago when he announced that there were no grounds to prosecute Ms. Clinton. For another, whatever the wisdom of Mr. Comey’s actions, there is no basis for such allegations…”
Comey sent the letter to Congress late last week with the revelation that emails related to Clinton’s private server were located on devices belonging to aide Huma Abedin and her estranged husband, disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner.
