Hillary Clinton belittled New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as Donald Trump’s errand boy during a campaign stop in Atlantic City on Wednesday.
Clinton visited the tourist destination to deliver a stinging rebuke of Donald Trump’s business history and tie it to the economic calamities facing the seaside Garden State city.
“This city has more than its share of big names on big buildings, but you and I know it was built by small businesses and the people who work to make it happen here,” Clinton said. “If your governor would start doing his job instead of following Donald Trump around holding his coat maybe we could get this city moving again!”
Christie, a Republican governor of an otherwise blue state who competed against Trump in the GOP primary, emerged as one of Trump’s earliest endorsements that helped the former reality television star successfully clear the Republican field. Christie served as a shadow of Trump at various press conferences and was mocked for his body language.
The New Jersey governor now appears to be among the contenders to serve as Trump’s running mate. Trump, as the GOP’s presumptive nominee, has long suggested he would reveal his vice presidential selection at the convention in Cleveland. Under two weeks remain until the convention gets under way, meaning Trump’s decision will be public soon enough.
If Trump does pick Christie, Clinton’s barbs on Wednesday likely provide a glimpse of the attacks she would unload as the general election race heats up this fall.
