Former House Speaker and heavy smoker John Boehner will be working for the same tobacco company that makes some of his favorite cigarettes, CNN Money reported Thursday.
Reynolds American, which produces Camel and Newport, announced Thursday that Boehner has joined the board of directors. The Ohioan, who had a business background before entering politics, will be expected to serve on the company’s corporate governance, sustainability and nominating committees.
Boehner is known to favor Camel Ultra Lights and smoked so much while serving as speaker that his successor, Paul Ryan, had to get the office fumigated to get rid of the smell of cigarette smoke.
Ryan previously told the New York Times that in meetings, he kept his distance from Boehner because he hated “getting that smell in my clothes.”
Salary information has not been released by Reynolds, but CNN Money reported those on the board made at least $300,000 last year in fees and stock awards last year.
