Fired FBI Director James Comey admitted it was “possible” but “unlikely” that President Trump is compromised by Russian operatives in the wake of unsubstantiated claims made in the controversial Steele dossier.
“I think it’s possible. I don’t know. These are more words I never thought I’d utter about a president of the United States, but it’s possible,” Comey told ABC during an interview promoting his upcoming memoir, “A Higher Loyalty.”
Questions about whether Russians linked to the Kremlin could blackmail Trump were raised by the dossier, which was compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele and partly funded by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
The dossier states Trump may have been recorded as he engaged with Russian sex workers during a stay at Moscow’s Ritz-Carlton for the 2013 Miss Universe pageant.
It is also alleged the sex workers were asked to urinate on a bed in the hotel’s presidential suite once slept in by the Obamas.
“It is stunning and I wish I wasn’t saying it, but it’s just — it’s the truth,” Comey continued, referring to his inability to flatly deny the fact Russia could have information damaging to Trump.
“It always struck me and still strikes me as unlikely, and I would have been able to say with high confidence about any other president I dealt with, but I can’t. It’s possible,” he said.
A Higher Loyalty is set to be released Tuesday.
