Donald Trump dismissed Ted Cruz announcing Carly Fiorina as his vice presidential running mate Wednesday, calling it a “sort of crazy” decision.
Appearing on Fox News for a town hall, Trump said that the move was probably smart for Cruz given his Tuesday night defeats to want to turn the news cycle in his favor. However, he argued that it was “awfully early” to be making any sort of decision on a vice presidential pick.
“I just don’t see it. It’s awfully early,” Trump told Fox’s Greta Van Susteren. “You’re not supposed to be doing it this early. I don’t see it.”
“I just think it’s so early in the process. You have to first get the nomination. Here’s a guy picking a vice presidential candidate — he has zero chance. He has no path. It’s sort of crazy,” Trump said. “It gets him in the news cycle because he’s been totally taken out. He had a horrible day yesterday, and he came in third — meaning third out of three most of the time.”
“In that sense it was probably good for him, but people will not like it,” Trump concluded.
Cruz rolled out the Fiorina decision at a rally earlier Wednesday afternoon in Indiana, which could be the decisive state regarding Trump’s chances to get to the 1,237 delegate mark before the July convention. It came a night after Trump swept the five states that voted most recently, winning each in convincing fashion.
Trump declined to mention who he is considering for his vice presidential pick, saying that it’s too early to do so.
