Ilhan Omar quietly deletes controversial tweets

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., quietly deleted at least three tweets that were widely criticized as being anti-Semitic, journalists noticed this week.

The freshman congresswoman was condemned by Republicans and members of her own party earlier this month for two tweets implying lawmakers only support Israel for the political donations.

Another tweet, from 2012, saying “Israel has hypnotized the world,” was also deleted.

Under pressure from leadership in her own party, Omar apologized on Feb. 11 for the tweets, but cast the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s effort to lobby Congress as “problematic.”

“Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes,” her statement said. “My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole. … This is why I unequivocally apologize.”

Republicans have called on Democratic leaders to remove Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. President Trump called Omar’s apology “lame” and insisted she resign from Congress.

[Opinion: We already know Ilhan Omar is an anti-Semite. The question is, do Democrats care?]
