Pebble Mine opponents protest science review

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Opponents of the proposed Pebble Mine in southwest Alaska are lambasting the developer’s review of the scientific research it has done so far.

The Pebble Limited Partnership contracted with the Keystone Center, a Colorado-based non-profit organization that has expertise in environmental conflict resolution, for the review.

The Anchorage Daily News (http://bit.ly/VeS5y0) reports six days of review meetings began Tuesday night at the University of Alaska Anchorage and protesters were on hand to state their objections and their fears that the mine will hurt salmon.

The researchers are reviewing Pebble studies of the region’s geology, hydrology, seismic and volcanic risks, fish, wildlife and habitat.

They’re also looking at socio-economics and cultural studies.

Opponents contend the process is flawed and that the review will be biased.
