Walmart sold enough toilet paper in five days for every person in US to have a roll, CEO says

Walmart sold a large quantity of toilet paper this week as shoppers stock up during the coronavirus pandemic.

“In the last five days, we’ve sold enough toilet paper for every American to have their own roll, just in five days,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told NBC News on Friday.

“I think it’s important that everyone know our merchandise continues to flow,” he added. “There’s plenty of flow coming, but if everyone could just kind of manage and buy week-to-week rather than stocking up, at this point, it’d be helpful for everybody.”

McMillon also described how buying habits have changed throughout the last month, during which most of the country is adhering to social distancing guidelines to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

“It started out with food and consumables, and then, it moved to things like puzzles and games,” he said. “Lately, we’ve seen more grooming products. People are starting to need a haircut.”

Last week, Walmart started limiting the number of customers in its stores in order to keep up with social distancing guidelines.

The company announced last month that it would be paying out nearly $500 million in early bonuses to its hourly employees amid the coronavirus outbreak.
