Is that a loon in your pocket?

What is it about the loon that has cell phone users agog?

Since Friends of the National Zoo debuted an animal ringtone program in January, it has sold more than 1,500 ringtones.

And, although you might think that an elephant or tiger ringtone would be the people’s choice to come blaring out of one’s mobile, it is, in fact, the common loon that’s gotten the most downloads, 137 to be exact. (The loon also happens to be the state bird of Minnesota, so it could be that proud North Star Staters are skewing the numbers.)

Why the loon? “The common loon has a very haunting, kind of lyrical call,” said Matt Olear, media relations manager at FONZ.

The least popular tone? That would be the Asian small-clawed otter (doin’ what he otter).

“It seems like the kind of squeaky, high-pitched vocalizations are not as popular as the roars and some of the other things,” Olear said.

The Sumatran tiger, in fact, is running a close second, with 133 downloads.
