Representatives from both sides of the aisle gathered outside the Capitol on Tuesday to kick off a listening tour for the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), mother to 23 foster kids, offered comments on the importance of supporting the half-million foster children in the U.S. and more or less quoted Daniel Webster accurately. (Her “one heart, one cause, one country” line slightly scrambles Webster’s actual line about “one cause, one country, one heart.”) Bachmann ducked out of the conference a few minutes early, taking half the reporters present with her.
Only slightly more eloquent than Bachmann’s words was the green-and-yellow sequinned cowboy hat donned by her colleague, Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla). An advocate for Florida’s foster children, Wilson said she was thrilled to find out that a press magnet like Bachmann was involved with the caucus. “We’re going to get national attention,” Wilson said. “This will be wonderful for the children.”
Wilson later told Yeas & Nays that asking a former presidential candidate to be on the committee was wise. “I think it helps,” she said. “Did you see how the press left with her?”
