A sanitation worker collected the trash early–so the city threw him in jail

“Good enough for government work” is a thing—but maybe now it should be revised to “too good for government work”?

Atlanta sanitation worker Kevin McGill was sentenced to 14 weekends in jail for collecting the trash at 5a.m. instead of 7a.m. This violates a city ordinance and, supposedly, wakes up local residents—a crime that seems completely deserving of time behind bars?

Oh, and it gets worse—it appears McGill is not even the first sanitation worker to have been jailed for this very offense. According to the city solicitor, who spoke with local WSBTV, there’s just no other way to stop these dastardly overachievers from waking up early to do their jobs. “The only thing that seems to stop the activity is actually going to jail,” he said, claiming that residents sometimes call 911 when their garbage collector comes early in the morning.

“The solicitor said it’s automatic jail time,” recalled McGill. “He didn’t want to hear nothing I had to say. I said it’s my first time,”

“I just want this to be over with,” he said. “I’m away from my family, my wife, and she’s got to take care of the two little boys and I have four dogs.”

The flagrant law-breaker will now work during the week and spend 14 weekends in jail, so that all Atlanta residents may be spared the horrors of early-morning trash pickup. Thank goodness!
