PETERSBURG, Mich. (AP) — A new, hands-on math program aimed at improving student performance is being used at a southern Michigan elementary school.
Summerfield Schools in Monroe County unveiled Math in Focus at the start of the school year. Officials say the program underscores a stronger mathematical foundation for students and emphasizes number and operations in each grade.

Math in Focus was introduced in 2009. Summerfield is teaching the program to kindergarten through second-grade students and could possibly expand the program.
Five areas are outlined in Math in Focus including a focused syllabus, utilizing visual elements, focusing on number and operations, emphasizing problem solving and recognizing the importance of attitudes and metacognition.
