After a summer of voting, the winners — and all of the nominees — gathered at Morton’s, The Steakhouse recently for the Spirited Women of Baltimore’s power-lunch celebration.
More than 100 area businesswomen attended the benefit — organized by Monyka Berrocosa, chief executive officer of MyCity4Her.com — with the proceeds going to the Red Cross of Central Maryland. The awards were structured after Morton’s, The Steakhouse’s Women of Spirit awards, which are in partnership with the American Red Cross and honor women in the community who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to service and volunteerism.
This year’s Spirited Women award-winners — drum roll please — were E. Rachael Baird of Tilt Studio, Erica McCullough of Living Legacy Cleaning Service and Susan Schapiro, an educational consultant.
“It’s exciting to bring Baltimore’s leading women to Morton’s, not only to honor them, but also to support the American Red Cross,” said Judi DiGioia, sales and marketing manager of Morton’s.
“We are pleased to be involved with a lunch that celebrates Baltimore women who are living out our ideals every day in their businesses and personal lives,” said Dan Samborn, director of financial development for the Red Cross of Central Maryland.
Tipping a glass for charity
If you popped into the Mount Washington Tavern last Wednesday, you may have been served by some of Charm City’s local notables.
It seems “The Tavern” allows various nonprofits to host weekly guest bartender challenge nights, and the organization that “rings” up the highest bar tab wins $10,000, which is announced at the end of the year.
On this night, the spotlight was on 2007 champion Pathfinders for Autism. Among the competitors/bartenders were former Oriole B.J. Surhoff and his wife Polly, B’More moguls Steve and Mindy Geppi, Channel 2’s Mary Beth Marsden, state Delegates Jon Cardin and Dana Stein, and the gang from 98 Rock’s “Morning Show.” Who will win is anybody’s guess, but the competition is strong.
Ravens ‘chirp’ for a good cause
It was a packed house at Rams Head Live in Baltimore last weekend, as many a Raven took to the stage for a sing-off contest.
Participating Purple Birds included Derrick Martin, Chris Chester, Patrick Carter, Adam Terry, Nick Greisen, Joe Reitz, Lorenzo Neal and Jason Brown, who was the driving force in getting this event together to raise money for the University of Maryland’s VA Medical Center of Baltimore.
Maynard Edwards, who by day is the producer and co-host of the popular “Ed Norris Show” on WHFS-FM, was showcasing his band Flipside while “coaching’ the other competitors with their singing. Quarterback Kyle Boller did not sing but did show off some dance moves despite his injury, much to the delight of his female admirers.
The team’s new starting QB, Joe Flacco, got a case of cold feet and would not perform. Hmm, let’s hope he ditches that shyness real quick in today’s opener against the Bengals.
The hands-down winner was Terry, who nailed Don McLean’s “American Pie” — all eight minutes of it. New Ravens addition and four-time Pro Bowler Lorenzo Neil was the evening’s runner-up and showed off his drum skills to the tune “Roadhouse Blues.”
