No one has seen or heard from Winifred J. Matronia since New Year’s Day 2000.
The 56-year-old woman was last seen in Laurel on the first day of this millennium. When investigators searched her apartment eight months later, all of her personal belongings were intact. But 12 years later, there have been no signs of Matronia, and the reasons behind her disappearance remain a mystery.
Matronia was reported missing by an aunt in August 2000, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
Authorities searched her apartment on the 8000 block of Ashford Boulevard for clues about her disappearance, but the search yielded little information. All of her belongings — including documents, credit cards and her car — were still there. There had been no activity on her bank accounts, according to NamUs.
Matronia had retired from the C&P Telephone Co., and authorities believe she may have traveled to Florida or the Caribbean.
Her dental information has been entered into the NamUs database, a Department of Justice initiative that integrates information on cases involving missing and unidentified persons in hopes of solving cold cases.
Matronia would now be 68 years old. At the time she went missing, she was described as white, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 140 pounds. She has brown hair. Her left eye is blue, and her right eye is brown. It’s not known what clothing or accessories she was wearing when she was last seen.
