The money keeps pouring in, but the GoFundMe effort for fired former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe won’t raise its fundraising goal again.
“Although we know legal fees could exceed that based on the path ahead, we will not be raising the goal again,” a McCabe spokesperson told CNN.
As of Saturday at noon, the GoFundMe webpage for McCabe’s legal defense team, which will represent him in any congressional inquiries, dealing with the Justice Department inspector general investigation, and potential lawsuits, said it had accrued more than $500,000, double its latest goal of $250,000. The page was set on Thursday with an initial goal of $150,000.
“The response to this effort has been remarkable and beyond our expectations. Thank you to all who have lent your voices in support of Andrew and his family!” says an “update” note at the top of the page.
Any extra money not used for his legal proceedings will go to charity, McCabe’s lawyers said.
McCabe, a 21-year veteran of the FBI, was fired on March 16, two days before he planned to retire on his 50th birthday so he could collect a full pension. His legal team sought the money because, “at a minimum, there are a number of congressional inquiries that he will be required to respond to, as well as the broader Office of the Inspector General investigation that is ongoing, and any potential lawsuits he might consider,” according to the GoFundMe page.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe after the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General provided a report on “allegations of misconduct” by McCabe to the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility “after an extensive and fair investigation.” McCabe has said his abrupt firing was an attempt to smear him and discredit the special counsel investigation,
