Keys to the game

1. Run to the middle » Carolina ranks last in the NFC against the run. The Panthers are very susceptible up the middle, thanks to injuries to their top three defensive tackles. Pro Bowl middle linebacker Jon Beason is getting blocked too often because of this. Also, end Julius Peppers never has been known for his play vs. the run. The Redskins have a chance to get healthy on the ground, especially if they can power the ball out of the I-formation.

2. Capitalize on special teams » Carolina has struggled here as well. But if this is a close game, and it probably should be, then extra yards gained or lost could make the difference. The Panthers have had one punt blocked and allowed another to be returned for a touchdown. They’re last in covering punts and 30th covering kickoffs, in large part because they’re young. This would be a good game to use Santana Moss a time or two on punt returns.

3. Beware of the run » The Panthers are 21st rushing the ball, but that’s misleading because of how much they’ve been behind. However, considering the Redskins’ struggles vs. the run and their own problems throwing the ball, the Panthers would be wise to stay on the ground as much as possible. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are a potent combination and the line is rather strong. Look for lots of eight-man fronts.

Key matchups

Stephon Heyer • Redskins • RT » Hasn’t proven he can be a decent starting tackle; will that ever happen?

vs.
Julius Peppers • Panthers • DE »
He will move around, but the struggling Peppers has to be anxious for this matchup.

DeAngelo Hall • Redskins • CB » Has played better the past two weeks and he knows Smith well.

vs.
Steve Smith •
Panthers • WR » Often doubled, Smith is averaging only 12.7 yards per catch and has no touchdowns.

Santana Moss • Redskins • WR » He’s starting to become more explosive as they’re doing a better job getting him in space.

vs.
Chris Gamble •
Panthers • CB » He’s getting paid like a No. 1 corner, so this will be a good test to see if it’s money well spent.

State of the teams

PANTHERS » Carolina is coming off a needed bye week. The Panthers’ big-name players are underperforming, one reason for the 0-3 start. If they lose, they’ll have to hear questions about the job security of their coach, John Fox.

REDSKINS » The Redskins have become team turmoil, with offensive consultants, fighting between players and a defensive coordinator who is now silent. Yep, set up for success. Think this team is frustrated now? Watch them after another loss.

Examiner predicts

Yes, the Panthers haven’t won. They’ve also played three solid teams in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Dallas. The Panthers have holes, but the Redskins have not shown they can play well enough to win on the road.

Panthers 20, Redskins 13
