Poll: Obama’s approval ratings dip on ISIS, Iran concerns

The disapproval of President Obama is on the rise.

Disapproval of the president has risen to 51 percent amid poor views of his foreign policy work and a sense that they could lead the United States in the wrong direction, according to a new CNN/ORC poll. Forty-seven percent approve.

Obama has seen a negative shift in how Americans view his handling of the presidency since late-July, when 49 percent approved and 47 percent disapproved.

Majorities also disapprove of how Obama is handing the economy and foreign affairs, with 52 percent saying his proposed policies would move the U.S. in the wrong direction. Specifically, 62 percent disapprove of how Obama handles the Islamic State and 60 percent say they disapprove of how he handles the U.S.-Iran relationship.

The disapproval can be found in Republicans, who were already giving him bad ratings. Eighty-nine percent of Republicans now disapprove of Obama (82 percent did in July), while just 15 percent of Democrats disapprove (16 percent did in July). Fifty-eight percent of independents disapprove of Obama now, a number that has not changed since July.

The random telephone-based poll of roughly 1,000 U.S. adults was conducted Aug. 13-15 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
