There are a host of candidates lining up for the Republican nomination for a Virginia U.S. Senate seat in 2012, but a fundraising e-mail from the Tim Kaine campaign sent out Monday alludes to the most well-known – former Sen. George Allen – without explicitly mentioning him by name.
The man whose shoes Kaine hopes to fill, U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., sang the former Virginia governor’s praises in the e-mail, noting that while Kaine was governor, the state was named the country’s best managed state, best state for business, and best state for raising a child.
“Tim’s most likely opponent raised $1.5 million in the first quarter of 2011 — before Tim was even in the race,” Webb wrote, alluding to Allen, who Webb himself felled in 2006. “Tim has some catching up to do, and I hope you will help. An early contribution to Tim’s campaign will make a big difference in November 2012.”
Although Kaine has acknowledged that most people believe Allen is his most likely opponent, Kaine’s campaign only directly went after Allen for the first time last week over statements he made regarding the debt ceiling. A subtle shift in strategy in the works? We shall see…
