Senate GOP leaders urge Trump not to oust White House counsel Don McGahn

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell warned President Donald Trump against pushing out White House counsel Don McGahn following a Trump tweet Wednesday signaling McGahn is leaving. McConnell said McGahn’s significance “cannot be overstated,” and he wants him to remain on the job.

Trump tweeted today that McGahn planned to depart in a few months. The announcement comes following the revelation McGahn has been talking extensively to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is probing alleged Russian collusion with the Trump 2016 presidential campaign.

“If the reporting is true about Don McGahn’s time at the White House coming to an end later this year, it will be sad news for our country, McConnell, R-Ky., said in a statement. “Don is the most impressive White House counsel during my time in Washington, and I’ve known them all.”

“His departure from the White House, whenever that may be, would be a big loss for the Trump administration and the country. Don’s significance to the judiciary, the White House and the nation cannot be overstated, and I look forward to his continued efforts on behalf of our country.”

Earlier Wednesday, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, tweeted to Trump to keep McGahn on the job.

“I hope it’s not true McGahn is leaving WhiteHouse Counsel,” Grassley tweeted. “U can’t let that happen.”
