A group of Republican senators are seeking to advance more family-friendly pandemic tax rebates.
The Coronavirus Assistance for American Families Act, backed by Republican Sens. Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, Steve Daines from Montana, Mitt Romney from Utah, and Marco Rubio from Florida, would provide $1,000 to adults and children with Social Security numbers. Also, those married to foreign nationals would also receive the payments.
The bill is more generous for families with children when compared to the relief plan released by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, which provides $1,200 to adults and $500 to children who qualify.
Under the senators’ bill, a family of four would receive $600 more from their plan than from McConnell’s proposal: $4,000 versus $3,400.
The relief for both plans is based on income and begins to phase out for individuals earning $75,000 and joint filers making $150,000.
McConnell’s stimulus payment is also included in a broader, $1 trillion package that he is having trouble passing. The Coronavirus Assistance for American Families Act seeks to provide relief to individuals and families as the Senate debates the majority leader’s legislation.
“As Congress continues to negotiate another economic response to the pandemic, we should prioritize direct assistance to those who need it most,” Rubio said.
