Cameras found above toilet in Ikea bathroom

Ikea discovered and has since removed hidden security cameras in a warehouse bathroom, new reports say.

The company opened an investigation after an employee in Peterborough, England, spotted a red light in the panel above the toilet when the overhead lights were off last week, according to multiple outlets. When the employee reportedly investigated and found a camera in the panel, the person investigated and discovered more cameras above both the men’s and women’s toilets.

“The installation of the cameras in 2015 was to detect alleged activity that could have resulted in serious injury to co-workers, and to maintain a high level of safety on-site” an Ikea spokesperson told The Register. “The cameras were only ever intended to film activity in the roof space or corridors.”

Companies are allowed to have cameras in bathrooms, but they have to inform guests that they are being filmed, according to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Employees, alleging an unlawful invasion of privacy, are considering suing over the cameras.
