U-M, other Big Ten schools form anti-cancer effort

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The University of Michigan and other Big Ten schools say they’re moving to cooperate on medical research as well as competing in athletics.

Leaders from Michigan’s Comprehensive Cancer Center and other Big Ten school cancer centers kicked off the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium at a meeting in Chicago on Saturday.

The Ann Arbor school says in a statement that the goal is to “transform cancer research through collaborative oncology trials that leverage the scientific and clinical expertise of the Big Ten universities.”

It says clinical trials will be linked to molecular diagnostics so that researchers can “understand what drives the cancers to grow and what might be done to stop them from growing.”
