Pope Francis disappointed many of his admirers on the left for his meeting with Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, but on Friday, it became clear that he also met with a gay Argentine man and his long-time partner.
The meeting with the couple was the “only real audience” Francis had in Washington, according to the Vatican.
Yayo Grassi brought his partner of 19 years to the meeting at the Vatican Embassy on September 23.
“Three weeks before the trip, he called me on the phone and said he would love to give me a hug,” Grassi said in an interview with CNN.
Grassi and Francis were apparently friends when the pontiff, Jorge Bergoglio, was serving as Archbishop of Buenos Aires for 15 years, and originally taught Grassi in high school in the 1960’s.
