United aiming for Maryland stadium site

D.C. United took a major step toward a move out of the District of Columbia and a stadium of its own, jointly announcing plans with Prince George’s County leaders to introduce legislation in the Maryland state house to authorize United to move to the county and work with the Maryland Stadium Authority.

A news conference has been scheduled for Monday in which plans will be discussed for a 24,000-seat stadium that would cost between $180-195 million, funds for which are expected to come from the team and stadium revenue, according to a statement released by D.C. United and Prince George’s County executive Jack Johnson.

The team had sought for a number of years to work with the District to secure a stadium at Poplar Point in Southeast, but plans began to unravel during the first part of last year.

Meanwhile, a feasibility study commissioned by the Prince George’s County administrators and conducted by the Maryland Stadium Authority was presented to the Prince George’s County Council last September, arguing that a stadium could generate $65-80 million in revenue annually.

A specific site for the stadium has not yet been determined.
