H.R. McMaster: Kim Jong Un must ‘give up his nuclear weapons’ because Trump will not tolerate threats

National security adviser H.R. McMaster said Kim Jong Un will have to denuclearize North Korea because President Trump will not “tolerate” nuclear threats to the U.S. homeland.

“Well, he’s going to have to give up his nuclear weapons, because the president has said that he is not going to tolerate this regime threatening the United States and our citizens with a nuclear weapon,” McMaster told ABC’s “This Week,” referring to North Korea’s leader.

ABC host George Stephanopoulos asked whether that meant Trump was ready to respond with military action.

“He’s been very clear about that,” McMaster replied. “That all options are on the table.”

McMaster added one of the options under consideration was maximizing pressure on North Korea through sanctions, but that a “fundamentally” different approach to the rogue nation was required as past efforts to curtail its menacing behavior had evidently failed.

McMaster also said parts of the United Nations have not been a friend to the U.S., ahead of Trump’s first address to the international organization.

The president would speak to the U.N.’s need to reform and refocus so it can remain “true” to its charter, McMaster continued.
