Cruz promises to pursue Clinton indictment if elected

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz on Friday became the second presidential candidate to say he would seek to prosecute Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton if he is elected to the White House.

“Would you aggressively go after Hillary Clinton if the [Federal Bureau of Investigation] believes she committed felonies?” Cruz was asked by Fox News host Sean Hannity at a rally in Orlando.

“Absolutely yes,” Cruz responded. “There is a principle here that matters. This country was founded on the principle that no one is above the law, and whether it is the Clintons or whether it is some in the Republican Party who think they are above the law, that the law doesn’t apply to them, that’s not how it works,” he added.

Though the FBI is aggressively investigating Clinton’s misuse of a personal server to send emails during her tenure as secretary of state, the agency can only advise the Justice Department on whether to prosecute. In the event the FBI determines Clinton’s wrongdoing was serious enough to warrant an indictment, Republicans are skeptical that Obama’s Justice Department will act on the determination.

It would be unusual for a subsequent administration to reopen the issue, but the prospect of doing has become increasingly popular among Republican voters. Party frontrunner Donald Trump made headlines in February for becoming the first candidate to say he would pursue an indictment if he is elected president.

Trump has also suggested that Clinton is running for the White House in part to avoid being prosecuted by a Republican administration.
