The University of Toledo hosted an inaugural symposium digging into the weeds of the “the legal, ethical, scientific and business aspects of cannabis” on Friday.
The inaugural “Ohio Cannabis Symposium for Attorneys, Medical Professionals and Entrepreneurs” featured Toledo, Ohio, native Pete Kadens, the co-founder of the second-largest cannabis company in the world, Green Thumb Industries. It has a market capitalization of more than $6 billion.
Students and medical, business, and legal professionals alike were invited, with students paying $25 to register and others paying $275. All attendees received six continuing education credits for their participation, and the College of Law sponsored 10 students to attend.

“The business, employment and tax opportunities from cannabis are significant, as the market’s revenue is $150 billion annually,” Brandon Cohen, a senior lecturer in the John B. and Lillian E. Neff College of Business and Innovation, said. “This revenue and corresponding tax dollars provide significant wealth creation and resources for employment and social programs in the states where it is legal.”
Recreational marijuana is illegal in Ohio, but there is a petition to legalize up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana for those over the age of 21 that could reach the state’s November ballot.

An Ohioan caught with fewer than 100 grams isn’t subject to incarceration and is only required to pay a $150 fine. Those nabbed for selling the drug can only be subjected to a maximum fine of $150 for a “gift” of less than 20 grams.
The University of Toledo did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
