For the second consecutive day, a fire forced students and teachers to evacuate Kelly Miller Middle School in Northeast Washington.
A fire marshal was at Kelly Miller investigating Wednesday’s fire at about 11 a.m. Thursday when a second fire broke out in a trash can in a hallway near the lobby of the school, in the 300 block of 49th Street NE, D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said.
The school was evacuated, but there was little damage and nobody was hurt, Etter said.
School officials believe that the fire was caused by a student they and have tightened security, D.C. Public Schools spokesman John White said.
Etter would not speculate about the cause of Thursday’s fire or whether it was related to the earlier blaze that started in a pair of first-floor lockers. The school had to ventilated before the students could return.
Both fires remain under investigation, Etter said.
