Man injured in pit bull attack in Arlington

A 62-year-old man has been injured in an attack by two pit bulls in Arlington, officials said.

The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2000 block of South Oakland Street. The man was getting out of a truck when he was attacked — unprovoked — by the dogs, Arlington police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

The man’s 11-year-old son, witnessing the attack from inside a vehicle, called out for help. The victim’s 17-year-old son came out of the house and distracted the dogs with a shoe, Sternbeck said.

The dogs ran after ambulance workers as they were exiting the ambulance, so the workers jumped back in the vehicle. When police arrived, one of the dogs started to charge aggressively, so officers shot and killed it, Sternbeck said. The other dog was taken into the custody of animal welfare.

The man, who was “thrown around like a rag doll” by the dogs, had injuries all over his body, Sternbeck said. He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and he has since been released and is recovering.

Neighbors said they had complained about the dogs before, Sternbeck said. No charges have been filed against the owner at this time.
