STORYLINE:

On the fifth and final official day of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, revelers showed no sign of fatigue as they gathered by the thousands on the Flamengo park overlooking the Sugarloaf mountain for more music dance and costumes.

At the Orquestra Voadora block party, meaning “Flying Orchestra” in English, revelers danced to a mix of rock, pop and samba. The band created in 2008 is known for its diversity in instruments and in genres, having played all over Brazil but also in Europe.

Here in Rio de Janeiro, revelers like Renata Ishita from Sao Paulo said it was block parties like the Flying Orchestra that made the city’s street carnival a must.

“Here in Rio you step outside and you are in the carnival you get sparkles by osmosis,” said Ishita wearing gigantic colorful eyelashes.

And indeed the avant guarde Flying Orchestra attracts enthusiasts from all over the world. Julien Voisine for example landed in Rio three years ago and has been attending and participating in the Flying Orchestra block party ever since.

“Michael Jackson, some Nirvana, Brazilian songs also, without leaving aside all the carnival rhythms,” Voisine explained. “They do a big mix of this and the world loves it because each year they have more and more people.”

Last year 60 thousand people attended the Flying Orchestra party during Carnival. This years numbers were still not revealed however the extravagant and original costumes were enough to impress anybody.
