‘This is not America’: Meghan McCain rips protesters for turning New York into ‘a war zone’

A conservative host of ABC’s The View decried the actions of protesters who caused damage to her neighborhood amid nationwide demonstrations to highlight police brutality.

Writing to Twitter on Tuesday, Meghan McCain said she was appalled by the looting and rioting that took place on Monday night in New York City and demanded that Democratic leaders Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio be held accountable for their inaction.

“My neighborhood in Manhattan is eviscerated and looks like a war zone,” McCain tweeted. “DeBlasio and Cuomo are an utter disgrace. This is not America. Our leaders have abandoned us and continue to let great American cities burn to the ground and be destroyed. I never could have fathomed this.”

Protesters filled the streets of New York City and many other U.S. cities over the last week to demonstrate in the memory of George Floyd, who died while in the custody of Minneapolis police. What began as mostly benign and peaceful gatherings turned violent over the weekend with chaotic scenes of looting and rioting.

De Blasio and Cuomo have engaged in a fierce debate regarding how law enforcement in New York City should handle the riots. On Tuesday, Cuomo said de Blasio had failed to protect the city from bad actors.

“The NYPD and the mayor did not do their job last night,” Cuomo said. “The police in New York City were not effective in doing their job last night. Period.”

For the first time in almost a century, New York City was placed under curfew, but the order did little to thwart the rioting.
