Oklahoma validates support of death penalty

Voters in Oklahoma overwhelmingly affirmed their support of the death penalty on Tuesday.

State Question 776 passed, thus declaring that capital punishment is not cruel or unusual punishment. The Oklahoma Legislature can now designate any method of execution if the current method is deemed unconstitutional.

Since the 2015 planned execution of Richard Glossip, all executions in the state have been on hold.

The legislation passed with 97 percent of precincts reporting as of nearly 11 p.m. Eastern time, 66 percent to 34 percent.
