Linda Sarsour adds ‘context’ to claim that Israel is built on Jewish supremacy

Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour clarified comments she made during a speech in which she asserted that Israel was created based on the idea of Jewish supremacy.

“Over the weekend, I made comments about Israel that require context to understand,” Sarsour said Tuesday on Twitter in response to backlash to her original comments. “I was specifically referring to the racist argument at the heart of the nation-state law recently passed by the Israeli government — not the Jewish people. I apologize for the confusion.”

The 39-year-old founder of the Women’s March said in a speech last week: “Ask them this: How can you be against white supremacy in the United States of America and the idea of living in a supremacist state based on race and class but then you support a state like Israel that is built on supremacy; that is built on the idea that Jews are supreme to everybody else.”

Sarsour has long faced accusations that she is anti-Semitic. She supports the boycott, divest, and sanctions movement, which seeks to harm Israel economically and has connections to Nation of Islam minister Louis Farrakhan, who has referred to Jews as termites.

The left-wing activist endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders in September and has acted as a campaign surrogate for him. She said her support for him comes in part because of the increase of “white nationalism and anti-Semitism.”
