Most businesses in downtown Denver saw an uptick in business last week during the Democratic National Convention, but some establishments made a stronger play to visitors than others — the so-called gentleman’s clubs.
Downtown strip club Shotgun Willie’s wooed Democratic customers with a slow-moving purple convertible that had some of its scantily clad employees on the back (they do likewise on Denver Broncos game days). We saw one young lady shout to passersby: “Go ‘Bama, shake that ass.”
Spokesman Frank Borries says they stopped to take pictures with pedestrians “probably 1,000 times.” As for business, he said, “It’s crazy in here. We’re having a very good time.”
La Boheme Gentleman’s Cabaret wasn’t quite as forward, but they did get points for creativity on their marquee. It reads: “The sexiest Democrats inside. Who ever heard of a nice piece of elephant?” A club executive would not comment on business.
It was mixed at other naughty clubs around the city. Some told us their numbers are no different than usual. “The only guys we’d expect are the satellite and stage truck guys, but they’ve been too busy,” said a manager at PT’s Centerfold.
A manager at Cheerleaders, who identified himself as Mike, said that things were “picking up,” he said. He did add, however, that his club is about 25 minutes from downtown. Could it be that some convention-goers are venturing farther out, where they won’t be spotted?
On the fully-clothed front, the local Hooters made its own play. Outside hangs a sign that reads: “Welcome Senator Obama. Your table is ready.”
