He might want to see Planned Parenthood defunded, but John Kasich came out against a government shutdown.
The GOP presidential candidate spoke with Chris Wallace for Fox News Sunday. During their conversation, defunding Planned Parenthood came up.
“Some congressional Republicans say they’re willing to shut down the government when the budget runs out at the end of the month if that’s what it takes to defund Planned Parenthood,” Wallace pointed out. “Do you support that,” he asked.
Kasich started off by mentioning that “Planned Parenthood ought to be defunded, no question about it,” and spoke about how he’s “doing everything we can in Ohio to figure out how to get that done.”
When it comes to a government shutdown though, Kasich made some telling points about how Congress needs to be “more creative” with this issue:
Wallace tried to challenge Kasich on such a point, especially because during the 1995 shutdown, Kasich mentioned “fighting over deeply-held principles.” Kasich understood, but still remained firm:
…
Here’s the other thing. I feel very strongly about being able to defund Planned Parenthood, and a lot of other things. But, if you’re not going to be successful, then you have to be careful to think about other ways to achieve your objective, Chris.
As one who is in favor of defunding Planned Parenthood and against their disturbing practices, John Kasich presents an interesting view about shutdowns.
With Barack Obama in office and so committed to Planned Parenthood, it is worth questioning how much success such a decision to shutdown the federal government will have.
