Students take over Anne Arundel government

More than 30 Anne Arundel high-schoolers will be following county officials for a day as part of a student model-government event.

The students will shadow elected officials and department heads, like the police chief and planning director, on various days and will conclude the exercise with a mock County Council meeting Feb. 17.

The students will learn how the county government functions and debate issues. This past year, mock council members and administrators debated on slots and restricting cell phone use while driving.

The winners of the contest are: Maya Mundell, of Northeast High, shadowing County Executive John R. Leopold; Maya McAllister, of Meade High, shadowing Councilman Daryl Jones; Maxwell Schrack, of Glen Burnie, shadowing Councilman Ed Middlebrooks; Nafeesa Butt, of Northeast High, shadowing Councilman Ron Dillon Jr.; Ryan DeSautels of Spalding High, shadowing Councilman Jamie Benoit; George Inglis, of Spalding High, shadowing Councilman Josh Cohen; Benjamin Taylor, of Annapolis High, shadowing Councilwoman Cathy Vitale; and Michelle Aylor, of Southern High, shadowing Councilman Ed Reilly.
