White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said President Trump remains concerned about the national debt and deficits, even though the debt has increased by more than $1 trillion since he took office nearly 14 months ago.
“Of course, he’s still concerned,” Sanders told reporters during Friday’s White House press briefing when asked the nearly $21 trillion debt and rising annual deficits. “That’s one of the reasons that the very first budget they put forward tried to address some of those concerns. We’re continuing to look for ways that we can cut government.”
Sanders said the Trump administration has taken steps to address the growing national debt and will “continue to push for policies” to do so.
“I think we’ve done that in a number of ways through the deregulation process, cutting out a lot of inefficiencies in government, and we’re going to continue to do that,” she said.
During the campaign, Trump promised to eliminate the national debt in eight years, though budget chief Mick Mulvaney said last year his promise was “hyperbole.”
