THE DAILY OUTRAGE: Let them eat pizza

Who: Department of Education

What: Gave $110,000 to the Chico, Calif., Unified School District to purchase an industrial-grade, automated pizza oven and all the associated equipment necessary to produce 300,000 pies an hour. The purpose is to attract students to participate in the school lunch program.

Why it’s an outrage: The director of nutrition services for the district acknowledged that she’s competing with “every eating establishment in town.” In fact, she claims she’s even competing with moms who pack lunches. In other words, there’s no need for the program in the first place.

Where to vent: Call the inspector general at 916-930-2388.
