Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., said Monday that she will not support any compromise bill on immigration that includes funding for a southern border wall “under any circumstances.”
Harris told voters in Iowa at a CNN town hall that she would not support any bill to avert another shutdown that includes “some” border security funding for a wall or barriers along the border even if it was in exchange for permanent protections to so-called Dreamers.
“Let me be very clear,” Harris said. “I’m not going to vote for a wall under any circumstances.”
“I do support border security, and if we want to talk about that, let’s do that and let’s talk about what really accomplishes border security,” Harris said, pointing to updated technology and infrastructure. “Yes, I’m all for increased border security where we needed it. I am not for a wall.”
Harris has repeatedly referred to the proposal for a border wall as a “medieval vanity project” of the president.
Trump has called for $5.7 billion in funding for the border wall to be included in a government funding bill. A stopgap measure, approved late last week ending a 35-day partial government shutdown, expires on Feb. 15.
