Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said she believes every American should be eligible for mail-in voting and claimed there is no voter fraud of “any consequence” in America.
“We know vote by mail is the safest and most accessible way of making sure every American can be heard on November 3,” Abrams said Thursday night on MSNBC. “The reality is it’s safe — that there is no fraud of any consequence. In fact, in every single state that has used vote by mail regularly, Oregon for the last 20 years, the number of people who committed fraud is negligible.”
Abrams and fellow Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former first lady Michelle Obama, have been pushing for expanded mail-in voting to avoid the spread of the coronavirus at polling places.
Abrams added during the interview that “we need to get as many people to vote by mail” so that the homeless, people with language barriers, and Native Americans have the proper space to vote safely at the polls.
Republicans, including President Trump, have maintained that mail-in voting is vulnerable to voter fraud.
It was reported in April that more than 28 million mail-in ballots were unaccounted for over the past 10 years, and the Heritage Foundation recently compiled a list of more than 1,000 documented cases of voter fraud resulting in more than 900 arrests in 47 states.
House Democrats included funding in their latest coronavirus relief package proposal dedicated to expanding mail-in voting to the tune of $3.6 billion.
Abrams, who appeared alongside Biden on MSNBC, said last month she would be an “excellent” choice to be vice president.
“I would be an excellent running mate,” she said. “I have the capacity to attract voters by motivating typically ignored communities. I have a strong history of executive and management experience in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. I’ve spent 25 years in independent study of foreign policy. I am ready to help advance an agenda of restoring America’s place in the world. If I am selected, I am prepared and excited to serve.”
